Best Friends Animal Society has long been at the forefront of the No Kill movement and the scope of their initiatives, programs, and successes is staggering. At the heart of this incredible organization is their sanctuary, located in Kanab, Utah, where nearly 2,000 animals are given the help and love they need while serenely waiting to find their forever homes. Best Friends sanctuary has become the nation’s largest no kill sanctuary for companion animals; a home for dogs, cats, birds,  rabbits, horses, pigs, goats, mules, sheep, burros and wildlife. It’s no wonder this incredibly compassionate organization formally adopted an animal-friendly menu policy in early 2015.

In July of last year, our Chesapeake coordinator, Deva Holub, attended the Best Friend’s National Conference in Atlanta, GA, where she had the opportunity to see this menu policy in action. “The variety of vegan foods was mouthwatering! The conference was a three day event with full breakfast and lunch buffets. My absolute favorites were the jambalaya and the creole aioli.” Another conference attendee couldn’t believe the variety of foods. “Convention food is never very good and I wondered how they’d fare with a vegan menu, but I wish I could get their recipes. Really, really good, and I’m not even vegan!”

In November, Food for Thought was endorsed by Best Friends Animal Society, "Since the very early days of Best Friends, the organization has always believed that we can have 'a better world through kindness to animals.’ That belief remains today, and remains our guiding principle. While our goal is to end the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters, we believe we should show compassion for all living creatures. All Best Friends related events are vegetarian, and whenever feasible, entirely plant-based. Efforts like the Food for Thought campaign are very important, and Best Friends encourages other animal welfare organizations to adopt animal-friendly food policies themselves." We were over the moon to have such a prolific and groundbreaking animal organization supporting animal-friendly menu policies!

As a thank you and acknowledgement of all the hard work they do and the progress they continue to make for animals, we award Best Friends Animal Society, as our Food for Thought - February Shelter of the Month recipient!
