ABOUT FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Animal Place's Food for Thought program is designed to help organizations like yours adopt an animal-friendly menu policy for their shelter-sponsored events.
In addition to dogs and cats, your shelter may rescue farmed animals like rabbits, horses, goats, sheep, chickens, and cows. As with any good shelter, you strive to find forever homes for the animals you save. Yet, it may still be common to find that similar animals are served as the fare at your functions.
The Food for Thought campaign is intended to help you align your shelter’s value of caring for companion animals by adopting a policy regarding the type of food it serves... or doesn’t serve! To many people, rabbits, chickens, horses, goats, and sheep are companions too!

WHAT IS AN ANIMAL-FRIENDLY MENU POLICY? WHO SHOULD ADOPT ONE?

An animal-friendly menu policy is one that includes only plant-based, vegetarian, or--better yet--vegan foods. Vegan offerings are those with no meat, dairy, cheese, eggs, or animal byproducts.
Your shelter is a leader in your community and helps to set the bar when it comes to animal welfare standards. You work hard to improve the lives of companion animals and protect them from harm and suffering, so why not extend this to farmed animals as well? Animal Place believes that by adopting an animal-friendly menu policy, you are aligning your ethics with your actions and demonstrating that your shelter is a safe haven for all animals and welcoming of all types of animal lovers!
Organizations like animal shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, and rescue groups that work on behalf of animals should consider adopting an animal-friendly menu policy. Here are 21 Reasons to Adopt an Animal-Friendly Menu Policy and Sample Policies.
